PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE  

Education Initiative - 2006 - 2007

WHERE: Copenhagen and Odense, Denmark

WHEN: June 16-24, 2007 with an optional European Union seminar
in Brussels, June 24-27, 2007

PURPOSE: North Carolina educators will learn about Denmark and its role in the European Union to help strengthen their teaching about that region of the world. Participants will learn about Denmark's social service system as well as its contributions in the field of environmental science. The program will include lectures, independent research and a half-day excursion to Sweden over the famous Oresund Bridge. Participants will spend time with a Danish host family during a one-night homestay in Odense, home of Hans Christian Andersen.

COMMITMENT: Two-day orientation to learn about Danish culture and to prepare for travel, study program in Denmark (one week), and one-day follow-up workshop after the study program. Following the program, participants are expected to develop and implement a curriculum unit or other appropriate project on Denmark and/or the European Union to share learning with students.

COST: $2,675 for Denmark program; cost of Brussels seminar to be determined

WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO APPLY: North Carolina K-12 public school teachers with an interest in infusing information about Denmark and Europe into any aspect of the curriculum are encouraged to apply. Teachers of all subjects at all grade levels, as well as school administrators are encouraged to apply.

WHERE: Mexico City and Puebla, Mexico

WHEN: October 6-14, 2007

PURPOSE: To lay the foundation for partnerships between schools in
North Carolina and Mexico through which students will learn with, not
just about Mexico. Principals and faculty members from North Carolina
schools paired with Mexican partner schools will learn about Mexican
education and visit their partners to establish relationships and begin
designing collaborative student activities.

COMMITMENT: Schools commit to developing and maintaining an ongoing
relationship with the Mexican partner school through regular
communication and joint projects. The North Carolina school principal
and designated partnership coordinator will participate in a
pre-departure orientation workshop August 9-10, 2007; the study program
in Mexico October 6-14, 2007; and the follow up workshop November 10,
2007.

COST: To be determined

WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO APPLY: Schools which have completed an application for a
school partnership and been paired with a Mexican school are eligible to
apply to send their principal and faculty member designated as
partnership coordinator.

WHERE: China (Shanghai and Jiangsu Province)

WHEN: October 13-21, 2007
(with an optional extension to Beijing and Xian October 21-24)

PURPOSE: To lay the foundation for partnerships between schools in North Carolina and China through which students will learn with not just about China. Principals and faculty members from North Carolina schools paired with Chinese partner schools will learn about Chinese education and visit their partners to establish relationships and begin designing collaborative student activities.

COMMITMENT: Schools commit to developing and maintaining an ongoing relationship with the Chinese partner school through regular communication and joint projects. The North Carolina school principal and designated partnership coordinator will participate in a pre-departure orientation workshop August 16-17, 2007; the study program October 13-21, 2007; and the follow up workshop December 1, 2007.

COST: $2,325 per person

WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO APPLY: Schools which have completed an application for a school partnership and been paired with a Chinese school are eligible to apply to send their principal and faculty member designated as partnership coordinator.

Latino Initiative - 2006 -2007

WHERE: Guanajuato, Mexico

WHEN: March 26 - April 1, 2007

WH0: Mecklenburg County public policy and civic leaders

PURPOSE: To provide leaders with resources and information to create practical solutions for successfully incorporating immigrants into their communities.

COMMITMENT:
November 15, 2006. Initial local meeting (1-hour) Confirmed participants will meet for an initial gathering to discuss the program objectives.
- February 2, 2007. Study in NC (1-day)
Presentations, readings and facilitated discussions led by scholars and experts, as well as on-the-ground community leaders.
- March 26- April 1, 2007. Study in Mexico (7-days)
Seven-day program in Mexico to better understand issues impacting decisions to come to NC.
- May 18, 2007. Planning for Change (1-day)
Participants discuss what they learned and how it will inform local decision-making. Create an action plan for sharing lessons learned across the leadership of their county. The Center will continue to work with leaders in order to collect local solutions that could assist other North Carolina communities.
- Fall (TBD) 2007. Report on Progress (3-hour)
Meeting with team members to discuss progress on implemented plans.

COST: $3,800 per person. Includes workshops in NC and study program in Mexico (airfare, meals, hotels, speakers, ground transportation, interpreters, & more)

WHERE: Puebla, Mexico

WHEN: September 2007

WH0: Health leaders throughout North Carolina

PURPOSE: To provide NC health leaders with resources and information to create practical, insightful solutions that incorporate a better understanding of Latino/Hispanic cultures into health care delivery.

COMMITMENT:
- May 2007. Initial local meetings. (1 hour)
Confirmed participants will meet for an initial gathering facilitate by the Center to discuss the program and to begin preparing for pre-work.
- August 2007. Study in NC (1 day)
Presentations, readings and facilitated discussions led by scholars and experts from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke University, as well as on-the-ground health and community leaders.
- September 2007. Study in Mexico (7 days)
Seven-day program in Mexico to better understand Mexican health care, training
of health care professionals, Latino culture and related issues.
- November 2007. Planning for Change (1 day)
Participants report to other travelers regarding their plan of action for the next 6 months. Discussion across teams regarding coordinating efforts on similar projects.
- May 2008. Report on Progress. (3 hour meeting)
Reconvene to report across teams regarding progress made and lessons learned. The Center will support delegates to collect local solutions that could assist other North Carolina communities.

COST: $4,200 per person. Includes workshops in NC and study program in Mexico (airfare, meals, hotels, speakers, ground transportation, interpreters, & more)
