5 Million Cars in Beijing

Our Global Leaders delegation is off to a great start in Beijing, learning about governance and challenges associated with rapid growth in China. Here’s something I’d never thought about before:  Beijing has over 5 million cars in it, and that number is growing by 1 million every year.  China has established a lottery for people who want to buy cars—you can only buy a car if you win the lottery.  Electric cars are exempt from the lottery.

One early highlight of our program was a meeting with the  General Secretary of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress, Mr. Tang Long. Here’s a photo of the General Secretary with Sen. Pete Brunstetter, who is representing North Carolina so well as leader of our delegation!
